Implant energy (re-)charging system

In our days, active implanted devices are becoming increasingly and more and more widely used in therapeutics. In addition to the most frequently used pacemakers, cardiac defibrillators, drug delivery devices, neuro-stimulators, retina implants, hearing aids, incontinence management devices, bone growth stimulators and other devices are applied in order to extend the patients’ lifetimes and improve their living conditions. In the light of the ongoing rapid development of electronics and medicine, the number of such implanted devices can be expected to grow even further. As the implantation of such active devices is both costly and risky and, in case of certain applications, their uninterrupted operation is essential, the electricity necessary for their operation must be supplied in the long run and in a reliable manner.

Our company is involved in the research and development of intelligent energy management systems meeting the complex requirements described above, as well as of the intelligent and implantable human diagnostic and therapeutic applications based on such systems. 

The elements of the product family IntellPow are systems that may be battery-fed or accumulator-fed, based on the principle of capacitive storage or operating with a hybrid supply (the joint application of various energy supply and/or energy storage technologies), as the given application may require. We also established product classes in order to implement the effective energy management of devices with differing levels of energy demand. These product classes constitute complex system technologies optimized to the conditions required by the devices/implants to be supplied both in structure and technological make-up. The services and characteristics of these product families are as follows:

  1. They provide the opportunity for effective, intelligent and wireless non-invasive power supply and recharging, thus increasing the intelligence/calculation capacity of the implants while maintaining their lifetime. All of these services are coupled with the very favourable condition that the application of the technology does not require any surgical or even ambulant intervention, as patients may recharge the systems at home on their own as well.
  2. They realize effective storage protection for the energy storage systems (accumulator, battery, capacitor, hybrid) applied.
  3. They ensure the power supply of the units of differing energy demand of the systems supplied (the physiological monitoring and/or physiological data supply systems of intelligent implants).
  4. As a particularly important service, they also support the mobile telemetric diagnostic monitoring of the technological state of either the energy storage system applied or the system supplied.

According to their energetic classification, the product classes established cover systems with various levels of daily energy consumption ranging from 2 mAh or less (such as a mobile implantable blood pressure measuring system, for example) to 1,500 mAh or even beyond (such as the mobile artificial heart systems, to mention an important application).
